Student Success Statement--B.C Forbes

Student Success Statement

“Honesty is the cornerstone of character. The honest man or woman seeks no merely to avoid criminal or illegal acts, but to be scrupulously fair, upright, fearless in both action and expression. Honesty pays dividends both in dollar and in peace of mind.”

--B.C Forbes
I think that what this statement is trying to tell us is that you should basically never lie. Honesty is what you need to not lie. Honesty is very important throughout your life. With honesty you can avoid getting in jail for any crimes committed, for example. Honesty is being fair and being able to tell nothing but the truth. Honesty will eventually pay off in the future, it always pays back!

Student Success Statement

“Stop worrying about whether you’re going to win or lose and focus your full attention on what’s happening right this moment.”

--Phil Jackson (11 World Championships)

I guess what Mr. Jackson is trying to tell us is that we should not focus on the trophies or the medals or winning, but pay attention to the game or what is happening then and there. Do not worry if you will or will not win that gold medallion or win the championship, just play the cards right and you the awards will come after. So if you are worrying more about other things and not focusing on what you are really doing, you probably will not state on task and concentrate enough to succeed. For example, you are playing a Basketball game for the state championships; you have a lot on your mind, you are very worried and nervous about winning. But, once you get on that court, you can’t think about anything else but playing! Don’t worry about losing, don’t worry about what your teammates will think of you, don’t worry about making anyone proud, or winning the shiny trophy. Just pay attention to the game! In a sense this statement is telling us to focus on the game then winning.

“Truth is the only safe ground to stand upon.”

--Elizabeth Cady Stanton

I’m not certain what this statement means. I think what Elizabeth meant to express was that you cant lie forever, or you cannot depend on your lies/lying. Eventually the truth always comes out, it always catches up to you. I guess this means to not lie. You should not lie for anything because sooner or later it will all come back to you. So you want to be in the truth, the safe. The ‘safe ground’ they talk about is the truth, that is where you want to stand and stay. Do not lie because it is not right or safe.

Student Success Statement -- Claudius

Student Success Statement

“Everyone is the architect of their own learning”

-Claudius

This statement reminds me a lot of when people say you are the guide to your own life, or something along those lines. Here, Claudius was trying to say that you choose you education—whether or not you will learn or pay attention, if you will go to school or not, if you decide to drop out or not. What this statement is basically portraying is the reality behind someone’s choices, in depth it is saying that we all choose what we want; we choose whether or not to be happy. So what he means is that only you can build on your knowledge and be the architect of your learning and reach higher levels of education. It all starts with you!

Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement

“Start with what is right than what is acceptable.”

-Peter F. Drucker

Even if something may be acceptable—it still may not be right. You can’t always assume something will be right if It is legal or acceptable. For example, alcohol consumption—yes it is legal to buy and consume alcohol, but is it right? No, of course not, alcohol is not something pure for the body so it should not be okay to drink it, it is wrong. So as Drucker said, if you want to start off on the right foot you need to start with what is right not what is acceptable. You can’t get rich off of selling misinformative products, yes it accepted and legal, but you can’t lie to people and get rich off of their money, it is wrong. So do what is right and what is acceptable!

“To be great—concentrate”

-Orson Sweet Mardin

Mardin is basically saying that in order to be great, you need to concentrate. Concentration is always needed to be great in a certain subject or area; or even just to be a great person overall. So you can kind of say/conclude that being a good concentrator will also mean being great at something. Or vice versa, being great at something means you are a good concentrator. Either way-- you can say that you need both of these things in order to succeed!

“The man who has no imagination has no wings”

--Muhammad Ali

You need imagination to go place, to do things, to live your life. Without imagination you are nothing. You are boring and plain, you are not unique. Using your imagination will spread your wings and you shall soar to new heights. Use your imagination every day in everything you do. With imagination in mind you can do anything with your creativity and great ideas. Muhammad is right, a man without imagination will not go anywhere, he won’t explore. Imagination will always be needed to go places with your life.

Student Success Statement - Calvin Coolidge

Student Success Statement

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problem of the human race.”

--Calvin Coolidge, 30th president of the United States

Calvin Coolidge is wise, since he recognizes that nothing will ever replace persistence. Nothing will be the same or male up for persistence—its persistence or nothing. An example would be, you are a genius or having a talent. Such as, if you are the smartest in your class, if you don’t persist and put effort into what you do, then there will be no outcome. Now, if you are the best basketball player on the team, but you don’t persist and push yourself every day to do better; then don’t expect to get a scholarship. You can be the best in a certain criteria, but if you don’t work towards it, all that won’t matter. Persistence!

Student Success Statement

“Failure is only postponed success as long as courage coaches ambition. The habit of persistence is the habit of victory.”

--Herbert Kaufman

Failure in reality is just you giving up, it is when you lose courage and ambition. But failure is not forever, you do not have to be a failure; you can be successful as long as you keep that persistence and courage to keep going and continue, keep that habit to not give up ! Persistence is vital for success !

Student Success Statement- Confucius

Student Success Statement

“To see what is right and not to do anything it is want of courage”

-Confucius

I think what Confucius is trying to say is that, you are at a lack of courage if you see what is right, and not do it. For example, you might see everyone cutting in line to get their food, but will you do it too? No, you keep that courage and go to the back & do what is right. Now, if you witness wrong doing but still do it, that right there is ‘want of courage’ that shows your thirst—your thirst for courage. You need courage, to say no to wrong and to do all that is good.

Student Success Statement

“Persistence can change failure into extraordinary achievement.”

--Matt Biondi

If you give up so easily, you will go nowhere. If are persistent and constantly on yourself to become better—you will do better. Being persistent is the difference between failure & achievement. If you stay on the right track then you will succeed. But if you are not willing to commit or change then you should not be expecting any accomplishments, just letdown & disappointment is what you shall receive. Very simple—persistence is key to having success & great achievement in anything you do.

Student Success Statement - Anon

Student Success Statement

“Improve your performance by improving your attitude.”

-Anon

To improve yourself and certain areas or subjects, you must imply yourself up to it. You have to change in order for improvement. Change/ improve your attitude about math if you want that A+! Be a good sport if you want to win that softball game. All you have to do, is change how you see and feel about this criteria. If you know you dislike chemistry, then, do the opposite; devote your time to absorbing everything chemistry has to offer. You will see changes and improvement in your performance. It is very simple—improve your attitude if you want to succeed.

Student Success Statement - Mark Twain

Student Success Statement

Always do right”

-         Mark Twain

You should always choose the right, above everything else, make that your first priority. Always assure you are in the right, in the safe, in the good. Like Twain said “always”; it is a must to choose the right. Without the right, you will get no where in life, you will not succeed, and you will not be who you have always wanted to be. So again, always always always do what you believe, think, know is right! Don’t think about it—just do it!

Student Success Statement--Margaret Chase Smith

Student Success Statement

“The right way is not always the popular and easy way. Standing for the right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character.”

--Margaret Chase Smith

It may not always be the ‘cool’ thing to do, it may not always be something popular to do, neither will it be easy—but if it is the right thing to do, that is all that matters. If you do what is right even when it is unpopular or no one else is doing it, it wouldn’t matter as long as you are standing up for yourself (and what you are doing). When you do so, that is one of the biggest ‘tests’ of true moral. You are proving to have great and high morals. Stand up for what you believe in even though no else may be doing so. Do what you think is right and do not let anyone or anything stand in your way!

Student Success Statement - Liane Cordes

Student Success Statement

“Continuous effort, not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking our potential.”

-Liane Cordes

I think what this statement is trying to say is that, you do not need to be very strong or very smart to unlock potential and succeed. All you need is a little effort, to keep pushing yourself to do better and to achieve more. So like Liane says “not strength or intelligence” you don’t have to have the biggest muscle or have the highest IQ in order to be good at something, all you need is effort and to not give up—continuous effort!

Student Success Statement

“When an archer misses the mark, he turns and looks for the fault within himself. Failure to hit the bulls-eye is never the fault of the target. To improve your aim, improve yourself.”

--Gilbert Arland

When you make a mistake, who do you blame? The answer- None other than yourself. You must take the fault upon yourself, you must face your own consequences. If you trip yourself over a small pebble, don’t blame the pebble, it’s your fault for not seeing the pebble and tripping over it. In fact, you should reflect on your mistakes and learn from them.

Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement

The only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies on the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key to success. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure.
Thus, the first law I will obey, which predeceth all others is –  ‘I will form good habits and become their slaves.’

--Og Mandino

What my understanding is from this statement is that it relates the day before yesterday’s statement about having god habits and keeping them and dedication and devoting yourself to those good habits. So in turn, this statement says that you must live up to the big rule of having only good habits and ‘making them your slaves’ on other words doing every good habit and doing everything that comes with that good habit. The first part of the statement suggests that what makes you different from succeeding (in life ‘metaphorically’) and failing is you habits. Why? Because habits determine your life and whether you shall succeed or fail. So again, don’t go near any bad habits, don’t start any bad habits, keep your life and your good habits and you shall succeed! An example of this would be college: you have just started your first year in college (4 yr. term) and you have started a good habit of doing your homework before going out or anything else. But you have been invited to a party and they offer you alcohol, if you accept, you will be starting a bad habit. Avoid bad habits and succeed .

Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement

“The first law of success. . . . Is concentration to bend all the energies to one point, and to go directly to that point, looking neither to the right nor the left.”

--William Matthew

This statement is saying that you should not let anything lose your focus; don’t get distracted in any way! Concentration is vital to success. Throughout your whole life you will see the many distractions here and there—but as the statement says “looking neither to the right nor the left” do not lose your focus on your goals, on your career, on success, on what you want to do. In order to succeed you must be in complete concentration, and keep all other things ‘energies’ away and avoid them at any cost. Keep your eye on the prize!

Student Success Statement - John Wooden

Student Success Statement

“When I was teaching basketball, I urged my players to try their hardest to improve on that every day, to make that practice a masterpiece”

This rule is even more important in life than basketball. You have to apply yourself each day to become a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be. It begins by trying to make each day count and knowing you can never make up for a lost day.”

--John Wooden

When you put a little more effort into what you are doing, you will see the effort as an outcome later in the future.  If you can only do 1 push up at a time, but the test requires you to do 7. You push yourself more and more every day until you can achieve doing 7 at one time. Without practicing you will get nowhere; you will stay the same. If you don’t apply yourself each day to strive for better, you will see no improvement. In a matter of time you will be better and better, only by being and doing the best you can, will get any better. So, ‘make each day count’ put in your best effort and go out there and reach for the top and I promise you, one day you will be at the top!
