Student Success Statement -- Joseph Smith

What is our duty?

Student Success Statement

“It is our duty to concentrate all our influences to make popular that which is sound and good, and (to make) unpopular that which is unsound (and not good).”

-Joseph Smith

This statement is a bit confusing for me, I don’t seem to understand the meaning in this statement, but what I think I do understand is that Smith is saying that our duty as civilians is to do good and not do bad, to show others the right path and to concentrate on the good of the city and to ‘make popular” or in other words “show” what good and bad is and to teach and commute to others as well as they should commute to us. Our duty is to not only teach good, and encourage good, but also (vice versa) not encourage the bad, and lecture to not do bad or things “unsound”. One example would be as a citizen of the community to have motivational speeches and go out and teach others to do good. Another example would be: If you see someone littering; it is YOUR duty to tell that ask that person to pick it up or to pick it up yourself, or to report that to officials.
